Inspiration:
There are a few reasons and those few reasons are actually personal and close to my heart. If you haven’t already figured out, I am a young Filipino American who, in all honesty, loves Filipino Food. However my family, on both sides, has a large history of health issues. My dad, who is one of nine children, suffers from Adult Diabetes and he is not the only one. Out of ten children, seven of them suffer from the same thing. And my mom’s side, nine children, has a history of heart disease, my Grandparents, who I did not to get to know, suffered with heart disease. It’s sad when you grow up not knowing your grandparents, its something that I think all kids should do, especially with Grandparents who live in a completely different country. And I strongly believe it is because of the Filipino and Filipino American Diet. Filipino dishes contain a lot of salty things like fish sauce, which are basically raw fish and a large amount of salt, vinegar, soy sauces, all things that are high in salt and sodium. Along with the Filipino dishes, Filipino Americans also love junk food; this is from first-hand experience and just the culture of Filipinos who love things on the go. Another reason is, Filipino culture is extremely family oriented, which means there’s plenty of get together that include a lot, and I really mean a lot, of food and when you have a family as big as ten aunts and uncles, who have about two-three children, who can also have a few children themselves, not to mention friends and co-workers, the amount of food can increase rapidly. Now my solution, whatever that maybe, is not to completely stop eating Filipino Food, that’s blasphemy and unheard of in the Filipino community, but some how devise a plan that will keep Filipinos aware of their own eating habits and not to consume as much. However, the awareness of this epidemic is under the sheets and there isn’t much awareness because in the end, Filipino loves Filipino food, good or bad, and its pretty had to stop a whole culture to stop eating something they grew eating. I can contest to this because, I am an overweight Filipino American and I do exercise, but not enough for my diet to keep up. So in hopes in doing this project I will not only help other Filipinos changes their eating habits, but also my own.
